New Year's Cupcakes

A little late....

BF was supposed to go scuba diving on New Years day, but it got cancelled because we had a blizzard (I have no idea how he can hang out underwater when we have snow on the ground, but he swears he doesn't get cold). It got rescheduled for tomorrow morning, so I decided to make New Year's themed cupcakes anyway, even if we're four days in.
These are pretty simple. Chocolate and beer cupcakes with vanilla buttercream, as per BF's request. I used a wheat ale this time (Rickards White) and it really toned down the beer taste. At some point, I'd like to try these with Guinness to see how they turn out.

To decorate them, I did a mound of blue frosting using a Wilton 2D tip, and then a white swirl around it using a 1M. The year is piped with a #3 tip.

I think they turned out pretty cute for how simple they were. Just a tiny bit of extra work, but I think they get the message across.

Your frosting always looks good enough to lick the screen. Nice numbers.

Hi Jackie! I found your blog while looking for Bento supplies in Halifax. Does the store you mentioned still carry them and do you know of any other places here in HRM? I can't wait to get started although I realized that I've been essentially making Bento's without realizing it!

Hi Anonymous,

I've made a few bento lunches over the past few weeks, but they haven't really been worthy of posting (no new recipes) but BF has requested that I start making them again as well so I'm thinking next week. I need a few days to build up a freezer of goodies first!

Hi Spellflinger!

How exciting to find someone else in Halifax who also loves bento! A long time ago, I posted a picture of the bento box I purchased at Drala. They had them last time I was in (shortly before Christmas) and it seems like it's something they keep in stock regularly so I think there's a good chance they would still have them. I would just suggest calling first.

Sadly, that's the only place I've found actual bento boxes locally and I've been in pretty much every Asian themed store and grocery around here. Backyard and Veranda (There's one in Park Lane and one at Dartmouth Crossing) had some really nice stainless steel lunch boxes before Christmas though, the smallest of which would make a perfect bento box. I'm not sure if they still have them though.

Ebay and Jbox.com have been my best friends in finding bento supplies. Locally, silcone muffin cups, decorative skewers and sushi grass are about the only bento accessories I've found.

Feel free to email me any time if you need help finding something!

I like on line shopping with Ichiban Kan. http://www.ichibankanusa.com
I've orders lots of stuff from them and never been charged over $6 for shipping. Most of their items are around $1.50 each. I usually get my orders within a week.

Hi jomamma,

I've always thought that website looks great but sadly, they don't ship to Canada :(

I can't believe that... You are a lot closer to San Fran than I am here in Texas.... If you ever need anything let me know. I'll get it and send it to you.

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm really quite surprised that they aren't easier to find here ~ there are so many other ethnic food markets. Well, there were when I last lived here 13 years ago haha! I'll be heading to Drala in the next few days. I was thinking also maybe Pier 1? I'll let you know. I've got my husband jazzed about Bento boxes too ~ I just need to find a big container for his.....

Spellflinger... I have no trouble finding mansized bentos in the Asian markets. It's the smaller portion boxes we have to order. I also found a really cool double decker metal container at World Market. I don't know if you guys have this store.

Ack...I just noticed who wrote the post jomamma! We don't have that store here that I know of. I just did a search and nothing came up..... I did find some containers at the dollar store that will work ~ and tomorrow I'll be getting some of the food supplies. I'm so excited about the whole thing I can't wait to get started!

Yea, world market is an American store. A great store though. :) It is like a mix of Pete's Frootique and cooking store (depending on the state).
